About this publication

Released on the occasion of Vision & Justice: A Convening, this free, digital publication has since been made available to the general public. It follows the groundbreaking “Vision & Justice” issue of Aperture magazine, guest edited by Sarah Lewis, which sparked a national conversation on the role of photography in constructions of citizenship, race, and justice. Taking inspiration from Frederick Douglass’ landmark Civil War speech “Pictures and Progress,” this new civic curriculum addresses both the historic roots and contemporary realities of visual literacy for race and justice in American civic life. The book includes thirty-one texts on topics ranging from civic space and memorials to the intersections of race, technology, and justice.
